Engagement photos coming up? Here’s how to choose outfits and feel confident on camera for photos you’ll treasure forever.

Your engagement session isn’t just about pretty photos — it’s about celebrating this exciting chapter together. But for many couples, the question “What do we wear?” (and “How do we avoid feeling awkward?”) can add unnecessary stress. Good news: you don’t need to be models to look amazing. With a few simple tips, you’ll look and feel incredible during your engagement photoshoot.

1. Choose outfits that feel like you

Your photos should reflect your personality. If you never wear heels or suits, don’t force it for the camera. Go for outfits that make you feel confident and comfortable.

  • Stick to styles you already love and wear often.
  • Avoid anything that feels restrictive or itchy — you’ll see it in the photos.

2. Coordinate, don’t match

Instead of wearing identical colors, choose tones that complement each other. Example: soft neutrals, earthy shades, or a mix of light and dark tones. This creates a cohesive look without feeling like a uniform.

3. Avoid busy patterns and logos

Tiny stripes, loud prints, and big logos can be distracting and date your photos. Solid colors and subtle textures photograph best. Pro tip: bring a second outfit option if you’re unsure. That way, you have variety and
flexibility.

4. Dress for the season and location

If we’re shooting outdoors in spring, light fabrics and soft colors feel natural. For a city backdrop in autumn, deeper hues and layers can look stunning. Think about the setting and what will stand out (or blend in) beautifully.

5. Bring movement into your outfits

Flowy dresses, skirts, and soft fabrics create natural movement in your photos. This adds life and dimension, and you’ll feel more relaxed when you can move freely.

6. Prepare together and feel connected

Your comfort on camera isn’t just about clothes — it’s about connection. Spend time together before the shoot, joke around, and remember this is meant to be fun. Pro tip: a short engagement shoot is a perfect way to get comfortable with your photographer before the wedding day.

7. Trust the process (and your photographer)
